This programme is a unique service and is providing the beginnings of school health care and is the first of its kind in this region. The school nurse attends a school twice a year to deworm and vaccinate the children as well as carrying out basic health checks and referring them to the hospital where necessary.
Case History of a nursery school boy being identified on a standard school visit
During a visit of Sister Susan to Sibouche Primary School, she carried out a health check on 28 children within the nursery. There was only 1 out of the 28 that had no health problems.
This little boy was noticed to be very quiet, malnourished
with a swollen abdomen and small for his age. In comparison to his younger
sister who was more lively Susan suspected that he had sickle cell anaemia
and so arranged with his parents to bring him to the Acorn Community Hospital
